A group of four documents relating to Leonard F. Ross's Civil War career. Included are two communications from Ulysses S. Grant, of Dec. 4, 1861 (HM 69446) and of Oct. 5, 1862 (HM 6995). The latter recaps a dispatch from Rosecrans detailing the movement of federal troops during the pursuit of Van Dorn's forces at Corinth, Chewalla and Ripley, Miss. (1862, Oct. 3-4). Also included is a receipt from Henry P. Noble for a payment for a horse (HM 69444), and a copy of "Foraging Parties Instruction," with Ross's note "Please read to the guards" (HM 69447.).

Leonard Fulton Ross (1823-1901), Union general. He raised the 17th Regiment of Illinois Infantry, and was commissioned Colonel in May of 1861, leading it in Kentucky and Missouri. He commanded 3rd Brigade, 1st Division of the Army of Tennessee. On Apr. 25, 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General of U.S Volunteers.
